Message from the Executive Director:

As we wind down from a very hot and hazy summer, I’d like to simply thank each of you for the great work you continue to perform.  Whether it be trips to Camp Loyaltown, excursions to the beach, backyard picnics and cookouts, summer festivals, carnivals at Brookville or sun and fun at Eisenhower Park for 1000 people in our Day Hab program, everyone has made the most of it and I hope that you will continue to enjoy the outdoors for what remains of the summer.

As the days grow shorter and the weather cooler, we turn our thoughts to strategic planning.  It is vital that AHRC, Brookville Center and Citizens take inventory of our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) so that we can prepare successfully for the future.  Many of our staff, self-advocates, Board and family members attended a session with Thought Leaders representing various segments of our community on August 4, 2016.  This session provided the audience with perspectives that will prove helpful as we move forward.

On August 25th each corporation will conduct S.W.O.T. Feedback Sessions to engage the general public, staff, families and self-advocates in providing input into our strategic planning process.  This input will be useful as the Board and key staff prepare for Strategic Planning Retreat Sessions this Fall.  If you have not yet participated, please answer the four short questions: AHRC Survey All respondents to this survey will remain confidential and your thoughts and ideas will be greatly appreciated.  We look forward to your comments regarding the future of AHRC, Brookville Center and Citizens.

In spite of the challenges, our family of organizations continue to thrive and excel in the provision of high quality supports to people and their families.  The role that each of you play in helping us achieve this level of success cannot be overstated. However, we cannot rest on our laurels.  The world around us is ever changing and we must change with the times or risk becoming outdated in our approaches and service models. Innovation is key.  If we plan our work and work our plan, we have no choice but to do well now and into the future.

Thank you for the partnership and warm camaraderie that makes each of companies great places to work.  We can only get better.

This newsletter represents our latest effort to share information that is of direct interest to our employees, and many of the items were submitted by employees from across AHRC Nassau, Brookville Center, and Citizens. Thank you for sharing your news, and keep it coming each month!  Enjoy your monthly newsletter and take time to thank all of the terrific staff who make this happen each month!

As always, your feedback and comments are welcomed.

Sincerely,

Stanfort First Name

AHRC Story 1My name is Ian, I am a Residential Nurse for the CLS program at AHRC. I have been working for AHRC about nine months and Camp Loyaltown for a little over a year. There are five of my nursing school classmates working here as well, two with me in the CLS division and the other three work at the ICF.

I graduated from the Nassau Community College nursing program in December 2013. I am currently half way through my BSN at Suny Farmingdale. I have plans to pursue a Nurse Practitioner career and also keep pursuing my graduate studies in the Biological sciences. I have tried several different types of work in my life, including the Hospitality industry, Securities brokering and the Martial Arts. While i have always liked science, i guess it was my own Cancer survivorship and my mother’s battle with Pancreatic Cancer that ultimately led me towards a career in Nursing.
Camp Loyaltown was actually my very first nursing job, as it was for some of my classmates. Nursing school prepared me well, but they can’t cover everything. Camp was hard work, but also quite a bit of fun. I met so many people there, staff and campers alike. It was such a rich and rewarding experience. I can’t imagine my life now “not” having done it. Talk about getting a wealth of knowledge about the individuals in such a short period time. Nursing school could never duplicate that. I will never forget the summer of 2015 at camp and the positive impact it has had on my life and nursing career.
Now working as a residential nurse, I really get to see and provide the holistic care we as nurses are taught about. The big picture of our individuals that i am privileged to see, their health care, their work, their hobbies and their relationships.

I am a strong advocate as a nurse and i can’t see a better, more deserving group of men and women for whom i can put my talents to use for. This is an incredible place. I am blessed with great coworkers and a great support network at here at AHRC. I never imagined I would be doing this type of nursing and i am very happy to have been introduced to it. People can open doors for you, go through them. People will put out their hands for you, take them. You never know where the trail laid out for you will wind up bringing you, maybe some where you’ll enjoy. Be well.
